Community Greening and Service Projects
Crew members at the Detroit Youth Energy Squad help plan and complete projects that make Detroit a greener and more sustainable city.
Here are just some examples of projects that D-YES students have been involved with:
- Building a School Garden: Students planned a presentation to raise money for their school garden. Presenting their idea by speaking in front of a large crowd at a mini-grant event, the students won over $700 to make their plan a reality. The students built several raised beds and planted their garden at Detroit Community School.
- Water Conservation: The Detroit Youth Energy Squad worked with the Sierra Club and the People's Water Board to bring a rain barrel workshop to the Brightmoor Community. D-YES assisted in the event, in which neighbors built about 50 rain barrels for their community. Crew members have also helped lend their expertise to several of the Sierra Club’s water auditor trainings, in which neighbors were taught how to save water in their own homes and teach others how to do the same.
- Service Projects: D-YES has participated in several neighborhood, city-wide, and state-cleanup days. These have included helping take down blighted structures with Blight Busters, helping tend to community gardens, resurfacing a basketball court, and cleaning up and repairing parks.
